A young father from the U.K. was found guilty of murdering his 7-month-old baby boy. Dubbed ‘Cannabis Dad’, the father enjoyed smoking marijuana and would fly into rages when he was unable to get the drug.
The child’s mother said she knew the father was a threat to the boy’s safety, but she was afraid to be alone.
Kane Kennedy, the 20-year-old marijuana-smoking father who admitted to toxic rages, has been found guilty of killing his seven-month-old son, Oskar Jobey-Kennedy. The infant began crying when the father was in a bad mood, and to quiet him, the father put a hand over his mouth to smother him to death.
Kennedy denied killing Oskar at first, but evidence showed the father had long been abusing the baby boy.
The couple was shopping with Oskar and the parents got into an argument. They went home separately.
The next morning, Kennedy called emergency services claiming that his son wasn’t breathing when he woke up.
“I’ve woke up, I’ve woke up, I’ve woke up, I’ve fallen asleep. I’ve woke up this morning and fell asleep on the couch with my son last night and I’ve woke up and he’s not f–king breathing,” he told the dispatcher.
Oskar was unresponsive when emergency medical workers arrived and was rushed to the hospital. He was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination found the child had multiple bruises. The child’s testicles had been gripped, pinched or twisted. The injured testicles, according to reports, would have caused ‘immense pain’.
Injuries in his mouth were consistent with someone shoving fingers roughly in the baby’s throat. There were 13 marks on his face and neck.
Days before the child’s death, the young couple got into an argument via Facebook messaging. The baby’s mother, 19-year-old Tia Jobey, expressed concern over Kennedy’s pot habit and violent behavior.
“You can’t control your anger because of the weed I just want you to be a f–king* normal person,” she wrote in one message.
“If you’re not willing to be the man for me and for Oscar then I’m done. You make your decision and stick with it once you have made it there’s no going back.”
In another message she wrote, “I’m trying to make sure Oskar is happy and safe and while you are addicted to weed and violent and abusive he’s not safe at all…. You throw him around like a toy, suffocate him, stick your finger down his f–king throat! And he’s always in the middle of our arguments and fights. If you aren’t going to protect your son and be a f–king dad, then I’m leaving.”
According to the mother, when Kennedy used cannabis regularly, but it made him ‘paranoid about everything’. When he couldn’t obtain the drug, he’d get ‘stressy’.
Jobey’s defense attorney said the mother had fallen ‘head over heels’ in love with Kennedy when she was just 16 years old, and she had never been in a serious relationship before. Her feelings toward the father of her child ‘blinded’, according to the attorney.
The mother admits she knew that Oskar was in danger from his father, but she was afraid to be alone.
She thought she could prompt Kennedy to change. She only ended the relationship when she learned of the extent of Oskar’s injuries.
Jobey pleaded guilty to causing or allowing the death of a child, and she was sentenced to 30 months in a young offender institution.
Kennedy was convicted of murder and has been sentenced to life in years in prison.
